Goa swimwear season: when it runs and who books

The Goa swimwear season runs October to March. Why the window sits there, who is booking models during it, and when casting actually happens.

The Goa swimwear season opens in October and is effectively finished by the end of March.

Models who move to the coast expecting year-round work find that out the expensive way, usually in June, sitting in a rented room in Anjuna while it rains sideways and nobody is shooting anything. The window is real, it is narrow, and almost everything that decides who works during it has already happened by the time it opens.

Why the Goa swimwear season sits where it does

Two forces, and only one of them is the weather.

The monsoon runs roughly June to September on that coast. Beaches are unusable, the light goes flat and grey for weeks, and no producer commits a crew and a client to a location that might be washed out on the day. By the first week of October it is dependable again, and it stays that way until the heat builds in April.

The second force is the buying calendar, and this is the part nobody explains to models.

Swimwear sold for the northern hemisphere summer is photographed the winter before. A catalogue shot in November is producing images for a range that goes on sale in April, in Europe or North America, months later and a hemisphere away. The pictures have to exist before buyers place orders, which means the shoot happens in what is, commercially, the previous year.

So the coast becomes shootable and the brands need images at the same moment. That overlap is the season. It is not driven by tourism, whatever the beach looks like in December.

Who is actually booking

Swim and resort brands

The bulk of it, and where the rates are steadiest. Usually a multi-day booking, often twenty to forty garments across those days, with an early start because the light before nine is the only light anyone wants.

Manufacturers and private label suppliers

Us, and others like us. We photograph our own ranges so that buyers can see a garment on a body before they commit to an order. Less glamorous than a campaign, more regular, because it happens every time a range is developed rather than once a season.

Hotels and beach properties

Lower day rates as a rule, shorter days, and a tendency to rebook the same faces year after year. Worth more than the rate suggests if you are building a coast-based year.

Photographers building books

Be careful here, and I mean that specifically rather than as a general warning.

Unpaid work is legitimate when it is genuinely mutual and you come away with images you can use. It stops being legitimate the moment there is a paying client somewhere in the chain. If a brand is paying the photographer, the model is paid too. That test is simple and it holds.

The season is cast before it starts

Here is the thing that costs models the most work, and it is a scheduling problem rather than a talent one.

Casting for October and November happens in August and September. By the time you see shoots actually happening on the beach, those models were chosen weeks earlier, sometimes months. Arriving in Goa in November to look for work means arriving after the decisions.

What that means in practice:

  • Update your measurements in late summer, not in October
  • Have two or three pictures that look like you now, taken in daylight
  • Say plainly where you will be based and between which dates
  • If you are travelling from Mumbai, say whether you are covering your own stay

That last one is blunter than most guides will be, so let me explain why it matters rather than leaving you to guess.

A producer budgeting a Goa shoot is accounting for travel and accommodation for everyone on the call sheet. A model already on the coast for the season costs less to book than one flying in for a day, and on a tight budget that difference alone decides some bookings. It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with a spreadsheet. Say it up front and you will sometimes be the easier yes.

Weather is the risk nobody budgets for

Coastal shoots get cancelled. Not often in January, quite often in October.

We once scheduled a range for the last week of September, reasoning that the rains would have finished and we would get the coast to ourselves before everyone else arrived. They had not finished. We lost two days and moved the whole thing indoors, which is exactly the sort of clever idea that looks fine until it is raining on a beach you have already paid for.

Ask, before you travel:

  • Are travel and stay covered, or arranged by you
  • What are the call times, because a sunrise shoot in December means leaving at five
  • How many days, and what happens if weather takes one out
  • What is the usage on the images, and for how long

A reasonable client either pays a partial rate for a lost day or reschedules inside an agreed window. An unreasonable one expects you to absorb it, and you will find that out at the worst possible moment if you did not ask.

A preference I will defend

Given the choice, I would take a January booking over a November one every time.

The light is cleaner, the coast is past its most chaotic stretch, and the crews have settled into the season rather than scrambling at the start of it. November has more work in it. January has better work in it.

That is a preference, not advice. Plenty of models build a whole season on October and November precisely because there is more of it.

Goa is a season. Mumbai is a year.

Studio work does not care about the monsoon.

Swimwear and lingerie shot for e-commerce happens in controlled rooms twelve months a year, it is steadier, considerably less romantic, and often better paid per hour than a day on a beach. Models who work both tend to treat Goa as the season and Mumbai as the base, which is the right way round.

We shoot our own collections on our own floor for that exact reason. A room means we can photograph a range in January or in July without waiting for a coastline to agree.

If you want to be in front of that camera, send your card in late summer, before the coast fills up and everyone remembers to apply at once.

Casting

Want to be in the next shoot?

We photograph every collection on our own floor and we cast from applications. Send three pictures and your card. We read all of them.
