Comp card mistakes that cost models the job

The comp card mistakes we see every week in the casting inbox, why each one gets an application set aside, and what to send instead.

Almost every comp card mistake comes down to the same thing: the card was built to impress somebody, and the person reading it was trying to assess somebody.

Those are different jobs. A card that does the first badly still works. A card that does the second badly gets closed.

We read every application that comes through our casting form, and the same handful of problems turn up week after week. None are about how anyone looks.

What a comp card is actually for

Your card exists so that a stranger, on a phone, in bad light, between two other things, can answer four questions in about fifteen seconds. What do you look like. What are your measurements. Where are you. How do I reach you.

That is the whole brief. Everything else on a comp card is decoration, and decoration is what pushes the four answers off the screen.

Worth knowing: the card goes by different names depending on who you are talking to. Composite card, comp card, zed card, Z card. Same object.

The comp card mistakes, roughly in order of how often they arrive

Pictures that are not you any more

The most common one by a distance.

A card carrying images from an earlier point in your life is not useful to someone casting a shoot six weeks out. They need to know what will walk through the door, and a picture from two years ago cannot tell them.

You do not need a photographer for this. Phone, daylight, plain wall, someone to hold the camera. That beats a stylised shoot from 2024 every single time, and I will argue about that with anyone.

Retouching that deletes the information

Skin smoothing, a nipped waist, a colour grade that shifts your tone two stops warmer. Each one removes exactly what a swimwear or lingerie client is trying to read.

Two things can happen. The card gets set aside because nothing can be assessed from it. Or you get booked, turn up, and there is an awkward five minutes before anyone says anything.

Send the unedited version. If the only pictures you have are edited, take new ones this afternoon.

Measurements missing, stale, or quietly flattering

Swimwear casting is a matching exercise against a sample grade. No measurements, no match, and the card drops to the bottom of the pile without anyone thinking badly of you.

Take them yourself, in the last month, with a soft tape, standing relaxed, in thin underwear. Height, bust, waist, hips is the minimum. Shoe and dress size help.

If you are unsure, measure on two different days and send the average rather than the better one. Nobody is comparing you to another model. Either the grade fits or it does not, and a number chosen optimistically only produces a wasted afternoon for both of us.

Five versions of the same photograph

Same pose, same light, same expression, five times. That tells a client one thing while occupying the space where three things could have been.

A face you have covered up

Full makeup hides skin tone and changes face shape. Styled hair does the same to the line of your neck and shoulders. Both of those are things a swimwear client is specifically looking at.

Clean face, hair down and dry. It feels underdressed, and it is what the person reading actually needs.

Contact details only in the email

Cards get separated from the messages they arrived in. Forwarded to a photographer. Printed and left on a table. Screenshot and sent to a producer.

Name, city, a phone number and an email go on the card itself. Not only in the message. This one costs people real bookings and it takes thirty seconds to fix.

A file nobody can open

The mistake nobody writes about, and the one I would fix first if I were you.

A 14 MB PDF does not open smoothly on a phone on mobile data. A shared drive link that asks the recipient to request access is a dead end, because nobody requests access. A cloud link that expires after seven days will expire before the next range is planned.

Attach ordinary JPEGs, or a PDF under about 2 MB. Unglamorous, and it is the difference between being looked at and not.

What a card that works looks like

Nothing elaborate. Name, city, current measurements, a way to reach you, and three honest pictures:

  • One full length, standing straight, arms relaxed at your sides, plain background
  • One head and shoulders, neutral expression, minimal makeup
  • One in swimwear or fitted clothing, if you are applying for swim or lingerie work

Three that do their job beat twelve that repeat.

Most comp card mistakes are really this one wearing a different hat: models over-invest in design. Layouts, filters, a logo, a font nobody can read at thumbnail size. None of it helps, and some of it actively hurts, because a casting decision is usually made on a screen the size of your palm.

Digitals are not a comp card

These get confused constantly and they are not interchangeable.

A comp card is your summary: best images, stats, contact. Digitals are the opposite, deliberately plain pictures taken today with no makeup, no styling and no retouching, so a client can see the current state of things.

Send both if you have both. If you only have one, send digitals. A good client would rather see the honest version.

What actually happens to your card

We changed how we ask for pictures after watching what our first version produced.

The form used to request photographs in specific poses, which we assumed would make applications easier to compare side by side. It did the opposite. People sent us the pose instead of themselves, and the more instruction we gave, the more performed the pictures became. So we stopped asking, and the quality of what arrives went up immediately.

Cards stay on file for the next range rather than only the one in front of us, which means a no in September can genuinely become a yes in February. Sample grades are narrow and somewhat arbitrary, ranges change every season, and being wrong for one is not the same as being wrong.

But that only works if what we have on file still resembles you.

Update your card once a year. It is the cheapest thing you will ever do for your own bookings.
